Summary

The house is located on the exclusive Point Piper peninsula within the Woollahra Council area. The project involved alterations & additions to the existing late 1960’s or early 1970’s residence built over one & a half levels on a sloping block aligned west-east from the Wolseley Road streetscape. Its typology and culture is that of the freestanding cottage found in the area. The house is accessed via a floating concrete & timber bridge from the front footpath with double garaging accessed from a steep driveway from Wolseley Road. It appears to be elegant & contemporary from the street whilst also being understated with clean sharp lines and opens out to a large entry foyer & living room with views over the swimming pool & landscaped yard to Rose Bay Marina & Vaucluse.

The plan is a progression of spaces as is typical of Tzannes’ designs with a perspective that opens up proportionally towards the outdoor covered spaces, the yard & view. The perspective is emphasised by the timber feature wall to the stair void that acts as the focal point for the interaction of the different levels within the home opening to spaces of increasing volume both in the living/dining room in one direction & the light well over the stairwell in the other.

The house responds to the prevailing environmental issues of the site and has minimal impact on the surrounding properties in terms of overshadowing and obstruction of views.

The overall result is a spectacular modern family home which is in keeping with the sensational views afforded to the house from its location overlooking Rose Bay.
